Work in Progress:

Jesus Mortal

Albert Schweitzer

In 1906, Albert Schweitzer analyzed the various views of historical Jesus and showed that each scholar had developed a vision of Jesus that suited the scholar. For a hundred years scholars had been daring to examine Jesus as a historical rather than divine figure, and Schweitzer showed how biased each historian had been. In the same book, he promptly developed his own vision of Jesus that he found suitable himself. He depicted Jesus as an apocalyptic prophet whose Kingdom of God never came, leaving him to die disappointed on the cross. Schweitzer interpreted Jesus’ radical, demanding ethic as an “interim” ethic, suitable only for the short time prior to the supposed end of the world. Relegating Jesus’ ethic to the realm of failed eschatological expectations gave Schweitzer room to promulgate a new ethic of his own, one based on reverence for all life.
