Paul Paul is to Christ as Christ is to God. The early Christians defined Christ as the image of the invisible God, the one by whom humanity approached the father, the perfect lawgiver. That’s what Paul is for Christ. Paul defines, explains, and leads to Christ the way Christ defines, explains, and leads to God. It is from Paul that we get Christian theology, where faith in Christ is first declared sufficient for salvation, and Moses’ law is no longer binding. As God sent Christ to the Jews, so Christ sent Paul to the gentiles. Also in Paul, we first learn that the man Jesus was the mortal form of an immortal, heavenly being. Is Paul really that central to Christian theology? What about the gospel of John? Forty years after Paul, the beloved disciple also made tremendous contributions to Christology. The Ephesus congregation in the 90s, however, owes a lot to Paul’s work there in 50s (52 to 54), so the identification of Jesus as the Logos incarnate goes back partly to Paul. It would be going too far, however, to suggest that the beloved disciple is Paul’s paraclete to match Christ’s.
