Divorce Jesus spoke up against divorce. In Jesus’ day, divorce hurt the helpless, specifically women. Divorce was a man’s right to disown a wife. Jesus’ opposition to divorce aligns with his support in general for the weak, in this case married women who could be set aside at the husband’s say-so. Today, feminists support divorce as an important right that allows a woman to get away from bad men. Alas, there are a lot of bad men out there for women to get away from. The Catholic Church strongly opposes divorce. In classic form, the Church backs Jesus’ literal pronouncement (no divorce) rather than its spirit (protect the less powerful).
