humanism Humanism has Jesus written all over it. “Son of man” means, roughly “mere mortal” or “human being.” So “humanism” could be rendered “son-of-man-ism.” That sounds like something from Jesus’ neighborhood. Jesus was all about the mere mortal, the human being. He declared humans to be lords of the sabbath. He declared even the lowly to be blessed. He taught about how we should treat other humans, not about what rituals we should undertake or what creeds to affirm to make ourselves pure or saved. Jesus embodied the humanism already well-established in Judaism, and he ratcheted it up a notch Humanism is like Jesus’ message with the logo filed off, a generic Jesus. Humanism is Jesus’ respect for humanity without his Yahweh or scripture or resurrection. Of course, this connection between Jesus and humanism prevails in the West, not necessarily where Muhammad or the Buddha inspired separate traditions of humanism. Historically, it’s perhaps just a coincidence that it was the Christian humanist tradition that abolished slavery, established democracy, and founded modern human rights.
