Monte, you're right, that there could be life on Mars. Certainly if little green people from Alpha Centauri had visited earth when it was covered completely by ice, they would have been hard-pressed to notice microbes huddled around sulphuric vents at the bottom of the lightless sea. My point is that it's not the case that there was life once and isn't any more.
