Religion:
Peter re "
Irrational Atheists"

This bit about irrational atheists could certainly apply to some of them. I think you do the scientific community disservice, however, in claiming that "atheists have made much of the fact that atheism is rare in the general population but the rule rather than the exception among natural scientists." I'd like to see some substantiation of that claim as it runs counter to my experience.

What I have experienced is that the more scientists look at fundamental questions and the deeper they get into investigating their area of research, the more likely you are to find that they have religious beliefs. That is, when looking at the mysteries of the universe it seems nearly inevitable that the closer you look the more mystery you see. While I suspect that most scientists aren't big into the various denominations of organized religion, I doubt that a statistically significant number of them call themselves atheists either

It’s true that my unsubstantiated claim about atheists touting the high incidence of atheism among natural scientists is unfair. It's not the only unfair part of that rant. The whole rant is a slant job. The only thing legitimate about that rant is that some of the high rate of atheism among natural scientists is due to self-selection by creationists. It's not all due to the character of natural scientists.

As to natural scientists and atheism, my research tells me that atheism is markedly more common among natural scientists than among the populace at large. Google it yourself if you don’t believe me. I think that lots of natural scientists are atheists because they favor ideas that they can verify.
