On this web site you'll find a growing collection of essays on the general topic of Jesus. These essays are drafts and notes on their way to becoming a book. In the mean time, you are welcome to enjoy them and tell your friends about them. "Jesus Mortal" isn't even the working title but I had to have something. The phrase is an intentionally provocative spin on "Jesus, Son of Man." The Aramaic phrase "son of man" means something like "son of a mortal" or, more freely, "mere mortal." Thus, "Jesus Mortal" is a loose translation of "Jesus, Son of Man," emphasizing his humanity. Getting to an understanding of historical Jesus involves both constructing his life story and deconstructing the complex theological stories that have been told about him. As a historical figure, Jesus is unique in the amount of information about him that people already know but that is wrong. Why a book about Jesus? Because I can't think of someone who could better use a good biography. Read comments or make a comment here. --Jonathan Tweet |
